Hydration: How Much Water Do You Really Need?

Writer: Carla BullCarla Bull

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times, but staying hydrated is one of the most important factors in supporting your fitness goals! Dehydration can lead to fatigue, cramps, and decreased performance, which is why it’s essential to drink enough water throughout the day.

So, how much water do you really need?

  • General Guidelines: Aim for at least 2–3 liters (8–12 cups) of water per day. However, if you’re working out regularly, especially in the current humid weather, you may need more.

  • Before, During, and After Exercise: Drink water before and during your workouts to prevent dehydration. Post-workout, aim to drink enough water to replace any fluid lost through sweat.

Actionable Steps:

  1. Set a Hydration Goal: Start by tracking your water intake for a week. Then, set a daily hydration goal based on your activity level.

  2. Hydration Reminders: If you tend to forget to drink, set hourly reminders on your phone or keep a water bottle with you at all times.

  3. Drink Electrolytes When Necessary: For intense workouts lasting longer than an hour, consider an electrolyte drink to replenish lost minerals.

Ensure you get enough water, and you’ll notice the benefits in your energy, recovery, and overall well-being.

Stay hydrated,
